Relief Maps - Info & Details

All the maps are made from our "mother world map", which is 43200 x 22898 pixels in size. We have developed algorithms to help us size the maps and borders accurately. We believe that the latitude and longitude marks are within a pixel or two of where they should be.

To achieve a standard map size of 15 megapixels, most maps have been reduced in size, while those maps of smaller areas - such as New Zealand, the Philippines, and Japan - have been enlarged. For enlarging we use specialized software to get the best results. The borders are made at full size separately from the maps.

Nothing is perfect, and our elevation databases show some joints and anomalies when converted into 2D images. We have done our best to smooth errors out, and we hope you will enjoy the maps as presented.

On the images on the map pages, you will notice some text in the bottom border of each map which is too small to read. One piece of text states "Mercator projection", the other "avalon-download-maps.com".

Here are sample details:

A typical border detail - the top
left corner of map no. ANM015, Western U.S.A.

The Straits of Gibraltar, from
map no. ANM002, Large
World Map.

Mount Fuji, as it appears on
map no. ANM053, Mainland
Japan.

The details above will appear smaller and sharper when printed of course, because your monitor resolution is probably less than normal printing resolution.
