In a Nutshell
Planet Earth is a fascinating place, and we hope you use our maps to spread information about
it. You can do what you like with our maps provided you don't make it easy
for someone else to avoid paying for them.
As with other suppliers of digital products, our products are sold on a
non-returnable basis and we cannot give refunds.
The You-May-Nots
You may not (a) distribute or sell our download files, or incorporate them into electronic
media such as websites, CDs, and DVDs, even if renamed and/or resized/resampled, unless they are files of
irreversibly modified single-layer-image versions of our maps; (b)
distribute or sell printed versions of our maps which can be easily scanned, unless
the maps are irreversibly modified versions; or (c) incorporate versions
which are not irreversibly modified into commercial publications, whether or
not they are the main content of the publication. We retain the copyright of the download maps, and you may not do anything that
brings us into disrepute or lowers the status of our products.
Definitions
A map is considered irreversibly modified if it is
modified heavily enough to make it quicker and cheaper for a third party to
download a map from our site than to obtain a free copy of your creation and
remove your modifications. Changing the sea colour and/or adding a sea
texture to a Basemap is not an irreversible modification.
A printed map is considered not easily scanned if it is
(a) used as, or in, a private document, or within an
educational establishment; or (b) framed; or (c) too large to be
scanned in one piece on a cheap scanner - the rule here is that the larger
map dimension must be 37 cm or more.
Examples
You can mark up any of our maps with the results of your research into, for
example, "Flight Paths of the Wandering Albatross" and give away
and sell printed and digital versions of your creation provided there are lots
of flight paths and related data on it. You can sell prints of our unmodified
Basemaps to the public provided that prints of 36 cm or less in the larger dimension
are framed. You cannot claim copyright of any of these maps, but you can claim copyright to your own
parts of the "Albatross" map.
Acknowledgement
If you widely distribute any of our maps, we would appreciate acknowledgement of our
contribution to your creation, or our copyright of the unmodified map, as appropriate.
"Basemap by Avalon" or "Copyright Avalon" would do just fine.
