Conventional map projections, such as the Mercator projection we use for our Mercator Basemaps,
necessarily give a distorted view of the world. We are all used to seeing these projections, but
sometimes it would be nice to view the features our planet in a more natural way.
This is what this collection is all about. We have built a model 3D globe, wrapped our Senior World
Basemap around it, added sea and ocean bathymetry, and flown around it capturing images.
A selection of these images is presented here. On this page, we present views of the principal land
masses of the world, on the next page we feature the world's oceans (Antarctica, a land mass, appears
in the Southern Ocean view no. AGVN12 on Page 2).
Because the surface of our globe is simply colour-coded topography and bathymetry, these views are not
exactly what you would see from space, but you might agree they give a fresh view of the structure of
our beautiful planet.
Each image is 3600 x 5400 pixels in size, including the border, big enough for a poster-sized print.
The globe in each view is 3400 pixels in diameter (9.0 megapixels in area).
The download files are 24-bit/16 million colour files. For delivery purposes, they have been compressed
just once at a very high quality JPEG setting. Like all our products, we recommend you open and save the
images to your computer in uncompressed (.bmp) or lossless compressed format (.tif, .png).
We also offer, for personal and non-commercial use, a free 1.0 megapixel version of each view (total
image size 818 x 1227 pixels). Just click on the "Open Free Version" link under each view -
the free version will load into a new window, and you can then save it to your computer.
Click on any image for a larger view. More information about these Globe Views is given
HERE.
