These maps have been made in exactly the same way as our
Globe Views, except that here our globe surface is based on NASA imagery. The
theme of this imagery is "land cover", and it is derived from satellite and
aerial photography. We suspect some NASA artistry is also involved. Man-made
features are not apparent. Whatever the mix of inputs, the effect is beautiful.
Hang a print of Antarctica (AGMN18, next page) on your wall and you won't
need air-conditioning next Summer.
Because this imagery is more detailed (3 km grid) than that used
in our Globe Views, we have been able to capture our images from a lower orbit.
Each map is 2160 x 2160 pixels in size, and covers almost exactly 6000 x 6000 km
(3727 x 3727 statute miles) top to bottom and side to side through the centre of the map.
All the maps are at the same scale. To help you get a better sense of the shape of
the surface you are looking at, and to help you draw lines and position objects on your
map, we have made two simple scale charts, one in km, the other in miles. Each square
on each chart is 500 x 500 km or miles. If you are going to download one or more of these maps,
you might like to open the full-size chart here and save it to your computer:

The download map files are 24-bit/16 million colour high quality JPEG files. Print on A4 or Letter paper at
120 dpc/300 dpi for a publication-quality 18 x 18 cm (7 x 7 inch) print, or at 72 dpc/180 dpi on
Super A3/B paper for a still-sharp 30 x 30 cm (12 x 12 inch) print.
